Fitting Dot takes about an hour with basic tools. Read this guide from start to finish before you begin. If your kit includes its own printed instructions, follow those wherever they differ from this page.
Before you start
- Check fitment. Make sure Dot suits your BMW model and badge position. If you're unsure, send us your model and year.
- Work somewhere clean and dry. Park on level ground with the engine off and the key away from the car.
- Install the app first. Download the companion app on your phone so you can test Dot before you finish the fit.
What you'll need
- Plastic trim removal tools (never metal, to protect the paint)
- Masking tape
- Microfibre cloth and isopropyl alcohol
- Cable ties
- A torch
Step 1: Protect the paint
Put masking tape around the badge on the bonnet or boot lid. This protects the paint while you work around the badge.
Step 2: Remove the factory badge
Gently lever the badge out at its clips with a plastic trim tool, working evenly around the edge. Take your time, because the clips release more easily with steady pressure than with force.
Step 3: Fit Dot
Clean the mounting area with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. Feed the display cable through the badge opening, then press Dot into place until the clips seat firmly and the badge sits flush.
Step 4: Route the cables
Run the display cable along existing wiring channels to the control box. Keep it away from hot parts and moving parts such as the bonnet hinges, the bonnet latch and the engine fan. Secure it every 20–30 cm with cable ties.
Step 5: Connect power
Mount the control box somewhere dry and connect it to a 12V source using the supplied adapter. If you're not confident working with your car's electrics, have a qualified auto electrician make this connection.
Step 6: Test and set up in the app
Turn on the ignition and check that Dot lights up. Open the app, connect it to Dot as the app shows you, and choose your first animation. Then try the loop, static and dynamic modes to make sure everything works before you close up.
Step 7: Tidy up
Check that the bonnet or boot closes without catching any cable. Remove the masking tape and wipe Dot clean with a microfibre cloth.
Using Dot day to day
- Change the display: pick from the animation library or upload your own videos and images in the app.
- Modes: loop an animation, keep a still image, or set it to change dynamically.
- Cleaning: wipe with a soft, damp microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive polishes on the screen.
Troubleshooting
- No display: check the power connection, the adapter and the cable connectors at the control box.
- App can't find Dot: make sure the ignition is on, your phone's wireless connections are on and you're close to the car, then restart the app.
- Badge not sitting flush: check that no cable is trapped behind it and the clips are fully seated.
